VO1 license plates are issued in Newfoundland and Labrador as specialty plates for licensed radio operators, allowing them to display their official call sign instead of a standard plate number. Only residents of Newfoundland and Labrador who hold a valid radio Certificate of Proficiency with a VO1 (Newfoundland) or VO2 (Labrador) call sign are eligible.The call sign and the vehicle registration must be in the same name. Operators are asked to ensure the vehicle is actually equipped for amateur radio communications.In Newfoundland and Labrador, the VO plate is a legitimate registration plate, but the operator is required to keep the original, standard-issue plate in the vehicle as well, in case a police officer requests to see it.The Dominion of Newfoundland prefix "VO" remains in active use by radio operators in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador.
